# Point-to-Point / Point-to-Multipoint Wireless Connection

When it's not possible to connect two points with a wired network, a high-speed wireless connection is necessary.

With the latest generations of wireless antennas, very high performance can be achieved in these types of connections, equal to or even greater than what would be obtained with a wired solution.

The main advantages of a wireless connection are:

- greater distance coverage
- less cable laying work
- high reliability
- simplicity of structure expansion
- much more limited costs

Depending on the type of connection you want to create, different radios and antennas are needed. The first aspect to consider is the distance you want to cover: the greater this distance, the greater the directionality of the antenna you will need to choose. The second point to consider is the type of connection you want to create: point-to-point, where only two points communicate directly, or point-to-multipoint, where there is a central station and several points connect to it to create a distributed network.

The radios that Marcom suggests for this type of application are those from the manufacturer **Mikrotik**.

Let's analyze a solution for point-to-point connection.

If you assume you need to cover a distance of about 2km, the radios that can be used are the **SXT Lite5 AC (now EOL)**. These radios are very compact, have a directional antenna with a 2° aperture and a gain of 16dBi. 
The connection is established at 5GHz, which ensures better performance and better protection from interference.

The license on board these products is L3, sufficient to create a point-to-point connection.

Antenna configuration is very simple: 
one is configured as a **bridge** while the second as a **station**. The recommended communication protocol is **nv2** from Mikrotik, which ensures faster connection restoration and more optimized communication.

If the distance to be covered is greater, you can switch to a radio with a higher gain and more directional antenna, such as the **LHG 5**. This has an antenna with 24.5 dBi gain and higher transmission power.

ATTENTION: the system must be sized for actual needs: buying a very powerful antenna to cover a limited distance does not make much sense.

The point-to-multipoint case requires a Mikrotik L4 license for the central point, as this will have to accept connections from multiple client radios.

The example below shows how to connect peripheral company branches to the central office. Optical visibility between the points to be connected is a fundamental requirement, as in the previous example. The distances that can be covered in this case are about 1~2km. All connected points will have visibility with each other.

In this case, the central point is managed by an **Omnikit 5 ac**while the peripheral points are managed by **SXT Lite5 AC** as in the previous example.
