# Redundant Fiber Ring Implementation

To implement a redundant fiber ring, we need two models of Inhand Networks switches:

The first model manages the ring and ensures the correct flow of packets, while the second model is transparent and does not require any configuration.

There are two types of data that traverse the ring: ring network control data and transmitted business data.
Consequently, before configuring the ring, it is necessary to establish the data path by setting up two VLANs.

There are three different node roles in the ring: owner, neighbor, and normal node.

- Owner**Node: when a link error occurs on the ring network, it activates the backup link and informs the other nodes. After the link returns to normal, it disables the backup link.
- Neighbor**Node: when a link error occurs on the ring network, it activates the backup link. After the link returns to normal, it disables the backup link and waits for confirmation from the owner node.
- Normal**Node: when a link error occurs on the ring network, it informs the other nodes.

In the ring network, an owner node must be configured, but it is not necessary to configure the neighbor node. 
When configuring the nodes, it is necessary to pay attention to the fact that the "left port" is the backup port and must therefore be correctly connected to the next node.

In our example, we will have the following topology:

The configuration of the two **Owner** and**Neighbor** nodes is very simple and quite similar.

VLAN ID 4094 is a VLAN index not used by other types of communication except for ring control telegrams.

In particular, the VLAN table of our switches is as follows:

The two fiber ports are FE1/7 and FE1/8 respectively.
