I dispositivi TCF-142 media converter sono dotati di interfaccia seriale in grado di gestire i collegamenti RS-232 o RS-422/485 e fibra multi-modale. Permettono di estendere la trasmissione seriale fino a 5 km anche in modalità ad anello. L'utiizzo del convertitore in fibra è una scelta quasi obbligata per reti RS485 che collegano edifici diversi, questo per superare le problematiche di isolamento elettrico richiesto.
